That year\, the two friends were both awarded The Marianne Moyer Myositis Leader Award. This award was presented for the first time in 2024\, and recognizes TMA volunteers who lead the way in our myositis community by helping others. \nNancy has volunteered for more than three decades\, since TMA was originally MAA (The Myositis Association of America)! For many years\, she cared for her husband Charlie who had IBM. Nancy generously continued to volunteer after his passing. She is a registered nurse – retired as Director\, Nursing Services\, San Diego Blood Bank and Adjunct Faculty\, Health Care Administration\, National University. Additionally\, she is a TMA Outlook magazine contributor. Her quiet\, steady presence has been a stable force for so many over the years. \nRhonda is a well-known and beloved advocate in the myositis community. Living with IBM\, she is known as the Myositis Warrior\, and 0ften raises awareness by wearing her Myositis Warrior cape out and about\, including San Diego Comicon! She administers the popular Myositis Warrior Facebook public group\, with an upbeat and humorous focus on often unbelievable myositis journeys. Rhonda is passionate about not only fostering visibility for this rare disease\, but also shining a light for others. In addition to co-leading TMA Southern California\, Rhonda also is the leader for TMA Flying Solo Affinity Group for those with myositis who do not have a live-in care partner.

SUMMARY:TMA Military Veterans with Myositis Affinity Group Meeting
DESCRIPTION:This month’s meeting will feature two Emmy Award-winning investigative journalists who have developed a thorough understanding of the challenges veterans face with the Veterans Benefits Administration and the ongoing effort to achieve recognition of IBM by the VBA. \nJennifer Titus\, investigative reporter for 10 Tampa Bay News in Florida\, and Rebecca Lindstrom\, Chief Investigative Reporter for 11Alive\, the NBC affiliate in Atlanta\, have both committed to covering this issue and advocating for greater awareness. Co-leader Jim Cressman has spoken personally with both reporters and is confident in their dedication to this cause. Their reporting has already demonstrated meaningful impact — generating attention from Congressional representatives and prompting action that veterans themselves have long sought but struggled to achieve. Through their work\, veterans’ voices are being heard at levels that matter. \nAlso joining the meeting is Luke Burleson\, Legislative Assistant for Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna of Florida’s 13th Congressional District. \nThis meeting represents a significant milestone for all veterans living with IBM. The collective efforts of this community\, combined with the reach and influence of these dedicated journalists and legislative allies\, are beginning to yield the results so many — including Jim and his fellow co-leaders Augie DeAugustinis\, Larry Leisher & James “Sudz” Szudzik — have worked toward for so long. \nFounded in 2022\, the TMA Military Veterans with Myositis Affinity Group is a dedicated space for veterans living with myositis to find support\, share experiences\, and engage in advocacy efforts. This group is particularly focused on working towards making Inclusion Body Myositis (IBM) a presumptive condition within the VA\, and provides invaluable resources for navigating disability claims and appeals. \nEvery month\, veterans from all branches of service come together to discuss the unique challenges of living with myositis and to support each other in their journeys. We look forward to connecting with you! \nAbout the Leaders \n \nLindsay Guentzel is an award-winning journalist\, writer\, producer\, and podcast host whose work has been featured in The New York Times\, CBS Radio\, NPR\, ESPN\, and more. After being diagnosed with ADHD in 2021—an experience she calls the best thing to ever happen to her—she spent two years learning how to navigate life with a neurodivergent brain. Then\, in 2023\, her world shifted again with a diagnosis of Dermatomyositis associated with Anti-Synthetase Syndrome\, a collection of rare\, incurable diseases that drastically changed her daily life. \nJim “Sudz” Szudzik \n \nJames “Sudz” Szudzik  served in the U.S. Army as a Chaplain’s Assistant during the Vietnam conflict. Following his service\, Sudz earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Michigan State University. Over the course of his career\, he held roles with Lansing Probate Court\, Service Beer & Wine\, Miller Brewing Company\, Philip Morris U.S.A.\, Bonanza Beverage\, New Mexico Beverage\, and the Madrigano family. He married Nancy Ann Wygert in August 1985. \nSudz was diagnosed with Inclusion Body Myositis in 2004 and has since dedicated himself to advocating for veterans with IBM and educating others about myositis. His daily life centers on faith\, family\, and friends\, embracing life’s challenges with gratitude and resilience. He also enjoys movies\, reading\, televised sports\, and collecting baseball cards. He lives in Menomonee Falls\, Wisconsin with Nancy and their dog Bodie.

Come for community. \nRegister Here \nAbout the Leader \n \nMeet Jim Milani\, a TMA member who was moved by the efforts of the late Marianne Moyer and the TMA Southwest Florida’s success in organizing a Myositis Symposium for Physical and Occupational Therapists for  Myositis Awareness Month. He called Rachel Bromley\, TMA’s Senior Manager of Patient Education\, Support and Advocacy to offer to organize one in his home state of Colorado. Rachel was ecstatic\, as Marianne’s vision had always been for this event to branch out to other TMA groups! One catch though – TMA Colorado had been dormant for quite some time. So she swung for the fences and said “How about reactivating the Colorado group at the same time? You can connect more PTs and OTs that way\, find a few volunteers to possibly help your efforts\, and provide and receive support for myositis along the way!” \nJim replied with one word “SURE!” And so this journey began. \nFor the past 20 years\, Jim has been a Physical Therapist and is Board Certified as a Geriatric Specialist. After several years of misdiagnoses\, he was correctly diagnosed with IBM in late 2023. Despite this\, Jim continues to pursue his love for activity and sports. He is passionate about sharing his personal and professional “fitness forward” philosophy\, helping people understand how to modify and adapt exercises to their functional level. Jim resides in Colorado with his wife\, Laura. He is a proud father of six adult children and has two grandchildren. Jim says his family and faith help him get through each day. While there is much about IBM that he cannot control\, he focuses on what he can: his attitude and effort. #justkeepswimming

Diagnosed with inclusion body myositis in 2020\, she brings a unique perspective as both clinician and patient\, and is passionate about sharing knowledge with others.\nCynthia Marks\, EdD – A former school administrator of 23 years and a Doctor of Education graduate from National Louis University. Cynthia is the primary care partner to her husband Ricky\, who was diagnosed with inclusion body myositis in 2016. She looks forward to supporting other care partners in understanding their roles while also prioritizing self-care.\n\nWe’re deeply grateful to Dr. Lockhart and Dr. Marks for stepping up to serve fellow community members in Georgia with their time\, care\, and leadership. It’s a safe space where you\, the care partner\, are the focus—not the patient. Here\, you can connect with others who understand your unique challenges\, share coping strategies\, and discuss how to navigate the complex healthcare system.
