The heart is a muscle, so just as myositis causes inflammation in other muscles in the body, inflammation can also occur in the heart muscle. This can lead to a number of cardiovascular issues.
In recognition of February as American Heart Month, former TMA medical advisor Dr. Christina Charles-Schoeman will offer a webinar about heart disease and myositis on Thursday, February 21 at 4pm ET. Myositis patients, care partners, nurses, and physicians are invited to join this event. After brief presentation, Dr. Charles-Schoeman will respond to participants’ questions about heart disease and myositis.
Dr. Charles-Schoeman is a rheumatologist and associate professor of medicine at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles. She is an active investigator in multiple clinical trials involving novel therapies for myositis, and her research in this area includes the study of cardiovascular disease in myositis, including the use of cholesterol-lowering statin drugs and their association with myopathy.
